On an earlier thread someone put up a picture of a Rolex GMT BLNR and it had shown the serial number on the rehaut.

Another user suggested that he remove the picture as someone could report to rolex (using this serial number) that it was their watch and it had been stolen, providing a serious problem to the true owner (user who put up the picture). The person reporting the watch as stolen is going to have to prove they bought the watch in the first place. Without legitimate receipts, service records, insurance paperwork, etc they can say it was stolen from them all they want, but if they don't actually have anything to prove they owned it who's going to believe them once anyone does a slight bit of investigative work? The same situation you describe could be applied to large TVs or fancy audio equipment (most of which have serial numbers on the back), classic cars (which have VINs), expensive jewelry, or many other items that could be fairly valuable. You can't just claim you had something stolen from you and get it handed right to you, you've got to prove it's yours and fabricating that won't be simple when the real owner likely has very good legitimate proof of ownership. The replys answered the question from the perspective of the original owner, but not from the pawn shop/chrono 24 purchaser.I know 'buy the seller' applies here, but I'm still curious if there is any additional checks one could go through. The worst case scenario in my mind would be to buy, send in for service and then have the watch confiscated. You would be out the watch and the money you paid for it.

In my understanding, going to a pawn shop and asking for your money back would more likely result in getting laughed out the door than getting a refund. So before you buy, is there any check against Rolex's stolen list to verify your intended purchase isn't 'hot'? Maybe going to an AD with the serial number they can phone-up Rolex HQ and check directly?. I've heard rumors that Rolex keeps such a database and any watches that come through their service center are checked against the database and if you watch has been reported stolen they won't return it to you.

I don't know if this is true or not. There are several online services that track stolen property and some that track Rolex specifically. But I'm not aware of single definitive source that you could check and feel confident the watch is good just because it wasn't listed.Pawn shops work with their local police department and online services and in most places are required by law to check every single item they buy. They don't want to be caught with stolen property.

If it is at a reputable pawn shop you are pretty safe that it has not been reported stolen.
